My Internet Is Slow — Checklist
Most slowdowns come from the home network. Work through the steps in order and measure the speed again after each one.
1. Measure Over Cable
Connect the computer to the modem with an Ethernet cable and measure. If the speed is normal over cable but low on Wi-Fi, the problem is the wireless network; see Improving Wi-Fi Range and Stability.
2. Other Devices on the Network
A phone downloading updates, a smart TV or a cloud backup shares the bandwidth. Take other devices off the network during the test.
3. Restart the Modem
Keep the modem off for 30 seconds, then switch it on. On devices that have been running for a long time this alone can be the fix.
4. Modem Lights
PON should be solid green and LOS off. If not, see What Do the Modem Lights Mean?
5. Still Slow?
If the wired measurement is clearly below your package, open a fault ticket on 0850 308 19 99; have the result and the time of the measurement recorded on the ticket.
