Even if your fibre line delivers 1,000 Mbps, wireless speed depends on where the modem is, which band you use and your device.

Modem Placement

  • Near the centre of the home, raised off the floor and in the open; inside a cabinet, behind the TV or at floor level the signal is blocked.
  • Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phones and large metal surfaces.

2.4 GHz or 5 GHz?

5 GHz is faster but has a shorter range; ideal for devices close to the modem. 2.4 GHz reaches further but is slower and more affected by neighbouring networks. Broadcast the two bands under separate names and connect each device according to its location.

Channel

In apartment buildings the 2.4 GHz channels are crowded. Leave the channel on Auto in the modem interface, or pick the least busy of 1, 6 and 11.

Large Homes

If some rooms get no signal, add an extra access point (mesh); "repeater" devices can halve the speed.
